Testing Grounds for Fan Site #4

Fan Site #4 Add comments

Oh yeah baby… I bought another domain for a fan site… I love making them… and what the hell.  I even bought Fan Site #5’s domain name with it.  I think I’m addicted to celebrities :P

With Fan Site #4 I’m taking a different approach.  You could even say it’s a laid back approach to building up a site.  I’ll let you in on why I’ve changed things a bit with this one.

I was checking out new sites for sale at SitePoint.com yesterday morning.  I found a fan site.  So of course I’m curious about how they’ve done it - because it was bringing in $150-$200 dollars from Adsense per month.  Not a bad start I thought and they were looking for close to $1000 to sell it.  Ok - now I’m very interested.

I checked out the site…

I have to say that I was shocked.  It really didn’t have much content.  Actually it had one page of written content - the biography.  All other pages were photos and videos of the celebrity.  There were 11 pages all together.

My interest was peaked.  I mean - the owner said it was a low maintenance site, steady traffic, and made that much a month.  I’m all over the whole low maintenance part.  The site has a PR3 and there is potential.  Even if it just sits there being a nice passive income.  Nice deal.  The owner then put up the actual screenshots of the income and traffic.  I could only imagine making that with my sites.  I mean what did he do to make this site take off?

Was it the celebrity in question?  Did it not have a lot of competition?   The money coming in was purely from an Adsense block placed smack dab in the middle of the page.  You couldn’t miss it.  Income = Ad placement.  See I have such a hard time making sites like that because I don’t think they look overly nice.  But maybe I need to change it up a bit in my mind if I’m going to improve my Adsense earnings on my other fan sites.  Something to definitely keep in mind.

So, I’m looking at the fan site - not a lot of written content… where is the traffic coming from?

The author of the site said he submitted the site to social linking sites - technorati, digg, reddit, etc.  Organic traffic.  A few links for various sites.  When I did a backlink check there were 2 backlinks - one relating back to the site and another from a PR3 site.

Interesting.

Why?

Because I could do this.  I now have a bit more information in my arsenal to use to promote Fan Site #4.  I decided to take a different approach to this one and instead of using WordPress I went ahead and used 19pages.com - super simple to setup and super fast to produce the pages I needed to make Fan Site #4.   I wasn’t looking for complicated.  I just needed a few pages to give it a whirl.

So what I’ve done for fan site #4 - Content = Biography of Celebrity.  Images/Video = Just added them to additional pages.  1 Video per page and I’ll have about 5-6 photos on a page depending on their size.  A big-ass block of Adsense smack-dab in the middle top of fold and some link adsense just under the header. Then I let this baby go.

I went to Technorati, Digg, Reddit, etc.  I’ve submitted the site to them.  We’ll see if I get any traffic from them.  Some would be nice.  Steady would be even better… but I don’t think that’s how it works with those things.  So I’m hoping I’ll get visitors… get some organic traffic and I’m working on getting a few backlinks from sites.

I’ll keep you posted on Fan Site #4.

I’m excited… because it’s a twist on the usual.
