I’m not THAT popular

Blog Networks, Everyday BS, Marketing Add comments

I’ve noticed lately as I’ve been visiting sites on my RSS feed… rather than just the feed itself that there has been a shift in the way many bloggers get they’re “stuff” out on the ‘Net. All this social networking and tagging… is totally making me dizzy.

We’ve got places like Technorati, Digg, MySpace, Bumpzee, MyBlogLog, blah, blah, blah rolling across the Internet at the speed of light. I was honestly sitting here wondering if I’ve missed the train. Wondering if my site will be left in the Internet dust because I don’t have 53 little icons stuck to the bottom of my posts where you can dig, feed, grow… or whatever to get traffic to this site. Seriously feeling a little anxious there…

Have I missed the craze of networking? of digging? of spattering my content all over the place so that I can get a piece of the traffic? Oh I think I have… not to say that I couldn’t pick up my socks and get my ass in gear and change that by adding those nifty things to my site. But right here, right now… I don’t damn well want too.

I love people who come here and chat in the comments. Lurvvve you! I love new commenters, I love the interaction. So why am I so stubborn to adding more to this site to get more people here to share the comment love… to offer ideas, to share my ideas… why am I so irked by it all.

A while a go… well, a long while ago I thought about joining an online community of bloggers. You know the ones that were out there like 9rules and other names that escape me at the moment. They were all the rage… and now I don’t hear so much about them. Now it’s on to something else. But at the time I really wanted to be apart of something. Now… not so much. I’m rolling on the whole - “Love me stick around… Hate me… move on, nothing to see here”. I’m all for getting my blog out there, but at the same time I don’t want people to feel forced to love me - to be apart of it. It’s just weird to me right now. I want people to link here because they want to - not because it’s apart of some script.

… and with that currently rolling around in my head - that leaves me thinking that I will never be “that” popular. I will never be quoted by the “big boys and girls” of my niche. I’ll never be a Rockstar. LOL. Not to say that I won’t ever change my mind and get sucked into the whole popular social scene - or tryout this damn software.

I’m just being anti-establishment…

I’m curious about what you think of this sort of thing - love it? hate it? unsure?

I love leaving comments on blogs but only when the blogger takes the time to engage the folks leaving comments. There is nothing worse than having a blogger make a post, a commenter asking a question, and the blogger never responding.

I avoid the social bookmark sites. I tend to find new blogs when the folks I normally read link to them. If they seem interesting I will add their feed if not I forget about them for a while.

If the goal of this site is get more traffic and earning more money I would dip my feet into the 2.0 waters.

If it’s just to throw out a story or two to a few friends, then keep on truckin!

    Either way I’ll stay tuned.

Yea I agree with Dan, I find my new sites I read from existing sites, as they are likely to be of similar content, in which case I’ll like them.

I don’t think I’d want to join a community or team of bloggers because it puts somewhat greater pressure on me to actually blog, and be good at it.

Currently I’m blogging about building my list, which I’m doing partly to keep me motivated, partly for extra exposure and partly because nobody’s done it in this much detail before.

While I’d like more traffic (and more comments that aren’t about viagra) I certainly wouldn’t want the pressure of being a “professional” blogger.

As Adam so accurately described - the best traffic is organic :)

I’ve joined several sites, like Technorati, Digg, del.icio.us, etc. and I think they’re cool sites that do cool things. But I don’t go crazy tagging and digging things all the time. And I don’t worry about doing it to try to build traffic or to get noticed.

I think social networking and a lot of the Web 2.0 stuff is great, but a lot of people (especially people trying to sell you something) end up coming across as “try hards” or try to turn something good into just another glorified SPAM technique. :(
I say do it if you like it, and if you don’t, don’t worry about it.

I have to agree on all of the above :)
I read a lot of blogs daily, and am beginning to get into the tradition of leaving comments on those that I like. I still have a (childish?) belief that good, sound comments are the way to go. That comments that come off as being of a certain level of intellect tend to give the author of said comments a higher credibility ranking in the eyes of the readers, thus hopefully allowing for them to visit your site.

When all this is said, yes, I have joined some of the sites. My reason for this is that I am quite new to this whole thing, and am trying to get to grips with it all :)
I still prefer commenting though, as I believe this creates a more personal approach.

    Regards.
