I <3 Text Link Ads

…. seriously. They are my current crush when it comes to advertising online. Since I’ve been running them - I’ve got two advertisers (check them out on the top right — over there —> ) and it’s been consistantly earning me money. Not to say that a few more advertisers on this site wouldn’t be nice (hint, hint!) But it’s nice to have a little consistancy in a rather inconsistant industry.

How much of that $15 do you actually get from TLA?

I would get 1/2 of what the advertiser pays for putting a link on this site. I didn’t mind the 50/50 split - they have me in the system, which means I’m not out looking for advertising. If this takes off… then that would me the opportunity later down the road for me to do it by myself.

You’ve done well empress, selling those two ads. Much better than me.

The only thing that worries me is the 50% cut that TLA takes. That seems pretty steep to me, and takes the opportunity to purchase ads out of the hands of the average webmaster.

A question for you - do TLA provide you with click through stats? If not, do you track them? If so, what sort of CTR on the text link ads are you getting?

I’m actually implementing a “buy me a beer” option on my site. Buy me a beer for $2.50 through paypal, and you get a text link above the fold on every page of my blog until someone buys me the fifth beer (There will always be five links shown, so when a sixth one gets bought, the first one drops off) It will be interesting to see how this goes, as I think it’s an affordable way for people to get a link on my site in a prominent place. (Which is why I’ve made sure that the “incoming links” and “top referrers” list below the fold, so as not to de-value the sold links (if I sell any))

The 50% cut is pretty steep. I’ll admit to that. I liked the fact that they found the links to place on my site. I know that I’ll get a steady payout for a few months (at least) - which is pretty good for this site… because I’ve had one hell of a time trying to monitize it. (As you have with your site.)

I don’t get to see the CTR on the ads, which is rather unfortunate - because I’m not sure if I’m doing well or being screwed over. But for right now - this is pretty nice… so I’ll just take it for what it is.

I really hope your “buy me a beer” works for you - I like that Idea. Good luck eh! I know I’m having issues with the number of links on this site - I may be depreciating the value because of all the outlinks. I think I’m going to have to downsize them.

So far *no* good!

I hear ya with all the outbound links. I also hear ya with the whole monetizing the site thing too. I’ve made a concerted effort to increase traffic and exposure this month, and diversify the subject matter of the blog to appeal to a wider readership, in the hope that I’ll find a way to turn a buck with it down the track.

I’m thinking of giving away some cash as a way of increasing traffic and exposure. Just trying to work out the way to do it that would be most beneficial to my site.

At least you can smile about it. It is very hard to monitize sites like ours - I think it’s just because we’re targeting a more savvy Internet user - who already knows about the ad thing, and are either blind to it - or the offers just don’t jive with what they want.

So I’m in the same sort of area you are when it comes to trying to capitalize on the traffic - but it’s not easy… at all.
