Brain Block.
Hit a Wall.
No Motivation…. at all.
I’ve been puttering around - working on a project I’ve so got to complete. Other than that… I’ve done a couple of one page sites. That’s it. I’ve not been updating any of my other sites. I just haven’t had time / motivation / interest lately.
Maybe it’s yet another phase to my quest as an affiliate marketer… I’m not sure. I’m just feeling a little burnt out - and I’m taking a break from some of my more content intense sites that makes my brain actually have to work…
I think that most affiliate marketers go through this sort of cycle tho:
- New to the scene… want to make MONEY!
- Have some good ideas and put up blogs to talk about them
- Add Google, Yahoo, or MSN ads to site
- Find a few affiliate programs … add them too.
- Write, Write, Write
- Find that you’ve run a bit low on ideas
- People don’t comment much anymore
- The ideas start to fizzle
- The whole project as an affiliate marketer starts to fade
- Time passes… a few hours, a few days, few months
- Realize that your sites are making a little money
- Think if you had a few more of these sites what kind of money you’d make
- Buy more domains
- Start more sites
- And it starts all over again.
I think I’m sitting at Number 9 ![]()

I have been round on that list more times than I remember. It’s trying to keep a social life etc thats the important thing and probably the key factor as to why we go in a circle on that list.
So here is a comment for you as you want some, I do read your blog, I am about to add a link to it over on mine at blog.brightonvibes.com and keep up the posting.
My best advice is, FINISH a project before even buying a domain for another. I have made that mistake too many times. I mean, I did nothing with most of them like fishyshoopthemes.com lol
Chin up!

I may not be commenting, but I’m watching and reading
Maybe affiliate marketing is what’s boring you. Maybe you need to get more involved in your internet venture and start producing products, and bigger projects.

I think your right Jean-Rene. I think having a project that is a little more near and dear to me might be the kick in the butt I need. Maybe write an e-book… find something I’m passionate about and write/sell it. Bigger Project. Get focused. Feel like I’m actually doing “something” rather than a lot of nothing.
Thanks Jean-Rene

I think every online marketer, whatever they particularly specialise in, goes through the stages you mention every now and then!
I certainly do - when I think it’s going well I get motivated and I can’t wait to try my next idea.. but it’s easy to get disheartened and stick with it when there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks Dave and Tom for your feedback… I’m glad that I’m not the only one who’s hit the wall on ideas and all that good stuff. I think I’m going to concentrate on getting the sites that I do have up and running - take it one site at a time. Get them done, move on to the next one and so on.
When I’ve done that - then I can think, brainstorm and all that good stuff for my next “big” idea - that will be more of what I like/have a passion for… while my other sites will provide me with a bit of an income

Good synopsis of what I think a lot of people go through. I also think a lot of newbies to the game get discouraged by a few of those, particularly 5, 6, and 11.
I am currently working on a “system” for myself to publish sites a little quicker than I have been. Looking around at some others that are doing the same things, it seems as though the people that put up a lot of sites have some type of system they run through.
Who knows? All I know is this online money making endeavour takes a lot more time than I thought. But ain’t it fun.

[...] Found a new site by a young lady trying to build an internet empire. She has a good list of 15 steps an affiliate marketer goes through at her blog. Her site is an interesting read, I suggest you swing by. [...]

That list does describe some of the steps im going through and im sure many people go through.
We all hit brick walls from time to time, but what makes someone achieve greatness and others mediocrity is determined by what you do from this moment. Are you going to persevere or give up?
Think about why you are doing this, if you have a big enough reason you will find more enjoyment in doing what you do and it won’t feel like such a grind
cheers,
Tez =)

I can relate to this little pattern!
I am currently on the second cycle throught it. =)
I think I cheated and went from step 3 on to step 11 in one jump.

As other people have already mentioned, this cycle is all too familiar to me
I guess knowing that it exists is half the battle to keeping that motivation up…
